ENGLISH

Wie is ‘inheems’ in Nederland?

Gemengde beroepspraktijk

ENGLISH

IndigenousDutch.NL is the documentation website of Teresa van Twuijver, designer, storyteller and researcher from Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Who is ‘indigenous’ to The Netherlands? Everybody who makes a home on these soggy soils that are also called ‘The Low Lands’, and lovingly care for it. Everybody here who breaths the air and drinks the water and sleeps under the sky. Anyone who deeply cares for the land, the living and the people, now and in the future.

Teresa van Twuijver is a designer, researcher and journalist. She lives in Amsterdam. Her focus is on textiles for everyday use, traditional and emerging (digital) experimental technologies in fabric manufacturing and their combination, new (organic) textile materials, biology and storytelling. For a long time she worked in journalism. In recent years, she has preferred to invest her energies and curiosities in art and design, research and experimentation, and climate activism. She is deeply convinced that society urgently needs (and will) change to ensure a clean, safe and fertile future for all living beings. As a designer she has a background in (new) media art and interaction design.

Education
She studied unstable media and digital technologies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, where she graduated in Fine Art with an honors degree in Artistic Research. She previously obtained two MA’s cum laude from the University of Amsterdam (English Language and Literature, Cultural Studies) with a focus on the 18th century. In April 2019 she successfully completed the international Fabricademy program at the TextileLab of Waag in Amsterdam. See LinkedIn for a full resume. Or visit the website www.teresavantwuijver.nl for a portfolio.

Mixed practice
Her mixed professional practice spans a broad spectrum, from textiles and drawing to gardening and column writing. The common thread is critically questioning reality and creating alternatives that appeal to the imagination. In addition to autonomous work, she also creates exhibitions. She has created exhibitions about bread, conversation, environmental noise, god and new media, and death in the techno age. She prefers to choose special ‘off-site’ presentation spaces such as a bakery, library, factory hall, church, former broadcasting station or cemetery. For this she received subsidies from, among others, the Creative Industries Fund NL, the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, the Mondriaan Fund, the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, and the Cultural Participation Fund.
